Google IoT news

We spent part of today sitting down with Google in San Francisco discussing their IoT and GCP (Google Cloud Platform). We learned some exciting news about their new platform: Google IoT Edge TPU. Edge TPU is Google’s purpose-built ASIC designed to run AI at the edge.

TPU stands for Tensor Processing Units and the Edge TPUs are Google’s custom-developed MCUs used to accelerate machine-learning workloads in edge-connected IoT devices. It uses a custom ID chip on each board which enables customers to securely access and manage their devices.

Sound familiar? It’s very similar to the Azure Sphere platform. Google is about ready to take preorders in their first Edge TPU devices in October (hopefully). The first devices will run a custom Linux kernel or Android Things. We think that sounds like an exciting new system that we just heard about today. The Google guys implied that it’s a confidential system, but we found Google’s Android Things site in their Android development site.

More information, please visit Google’s IoT Edge site. You need to request access, and I think they’ll be happy to work with you.
